Background
information
Due to processing at Alberta Employment and Immigration (AEI) and NorQuest
College, the College it waiting for approximately 200 living allowance cheques for Alberta Works grant funded students. AEI
says the standard processing time for funding applications is approximately 4-6 weeks. The balance of affected students
can expect to receive their funding this week.
What
NorQuest is doing for Students
FOR THE SPRING TERM ONLY, NorQuest is allowing students
to proceed with their registration if they have not yet received their government cheque. They are able to pay for program
costs, supply fees and book rental costs using their first Alberta Works living allowance. Once students receive their cheques,
they are expected to pay any outstanding fees. When students register, we will provide them with a written communication
to that effect and will also be sending them invoices after the term starts so they know how much they owe.
Upon request, we are also providing affected students with a letter that indicates they have applied
for and should receive Alberta Works funding. This will help those students who must provide verification to their landlord
or other creditors. The NorQuest Students’ Association is preparing in the event of higher-than-normal food bank requests.
